Modern streaming platforms normalize audio to a target integrated loudness โ Spotify and Apple Music use -14 LUFS, while YouTube targets -14 LUFS as well. Mastering louder than this doesn't make your track sound louder on these platforms; it just gets turned down automatically, often sounding worse for it.
Aim for an integrated loudness of -13 to -14 LUFS for streaming releases. For club or DJ use, -9 to -10 LUFS is more appropriate. Set your true peak ceiling at -1 dBTP to prevent inter-sample distortion during the encoding process. Export your final master at 44.1 kHz / 24-bit for streaming, or 48 kHz if delivering for video.
Before you upload, run through this checklist: listen on at least three different playback systems (headphones, laptop speakers, and a car stereo if possible), verify your loudness readings with a dedicated LUFS meter, check for any clicks or digital artifacts at the very start and end of the file, and confirm your metadata (track title, artist name, ISRC code) is embedded in the file.
